If you’ve ever sat down to book lash extensions and felt overwhelmed by the options — classic, hybrid, volume, mega volume, Russian, 3D, 6D — you’re not alone. The lash world has its own vocabulary, and unless you live in it, the differences aren’t obvious.
The good news: you really only need to understand three core styles. Classic, hybrid, and volume. Everything else is a variation of these three.
In this guide, we’ll break down what each style actually looks like, who suits each one, and how to choose the right set for your eye shape, lifestyle, and natural lashes.
The quick version
Here’s the one-line summary if you’re in a rush:
- Classic = one extension per natural lash. Natural, defined, mascara-like look.
- Hybrid = a mix of classic and volume. Fuller than classic, less dramatic than volume. The most popular choice.
- Volume = multiple thin extensions fanned onto each natural lash. Fluffy, dramatic, dark lash line.
If you want the detail — including which one is right for you — keep reading.
Classic lash extensions
What they are:
Classic lash extensions are the original technique. Our lash artist applies one extension to each individual natural lash, using a thicker single fibre. The result is a one-to-one ratio: if you have 100 natural lashes, you get 100 extensions.
The look:
Defined and natural. Classic lashes look like you’ve applied a really good coat of mascara — your eyes look more open and your lash line is darker, but it’s not obvious you’re wearing extensions.
Who suits classic:
- You want a polished, everyday look that doesn’t shout “lashes”
- You work in a corporate or conservative environment
- You have dense natural lashes already (since you’ll only get one extension per natural lash, fuller natural lashes mean a fuller result)
- You’re new to extensions and want to ease in
- You prefer low-maintenance beauty
What to keep in mind:
If your natural lashes are sparse, classic lashes will look sparse too. That’s where hybrid or volume comes in.
Volume lash extensions
What they are:
Volume lashes flip the technique. Instead of one thicker extension per natural lash, your lash artist hand-makes “fans” of multiple ultra-fine extensions — usually 3 to 6 fibres — and applies one fan to each natural lash. Each fan is so light that it doesn’t damage your natural lash, but visually, you’re adding many more lashes.
The look:
Fluffy, dark, dramatic. Volume lashes give a much fuller lash line and a more defined eye. Depending on the fan size, the look can range from softly fluffy (2D–3D) to genuinely glamorous (5D–6D).
Who suits volume:
- You want a noticeable, eye-opening transformation
- Your natural lashes are sparse, fine, or short
- You love the look of a full strip lash but don’t want the daily application
- You’re going to a wedding, holiday, or special event
- You’re comfortable with a more dramatic beauty look
What to keep in mind:
Volume lashes require more skill to apply, take longer (around 2.5–3 hours for a full set), and cost slightly more than classic. They also benefit most from regular infills every 2–3 weeks to keep the fans looking full.
Hybrid lash extensions
What they are:
Exactly what it sounds like — a mix of classic and volume techniques in the same set. Typically a 50/50 or 60/40 blend, depending on the look you’re after. Your lash artist places classic extensions on some natural lashes and volume fans on others.
The look:
Textured, full, but not overdone. Hybrid lashes have more density than classic but more variation than pure volume, which creates a softer, more “real lash” effect. Think Kim Kardashian’s everyday lash look rather than a glamour shoot.
Who suits hybrid:
- You want fuller lashes but still want to look like you (just better)
- You can’t decide between classic and volume — this is the in-between
- Your natural lashes have gaps you want to fill in
- You want versatility — hybrid works for both everyday and going out
What to keep in mind:
Hybrid is our most popular style for a reason — it’s the most universally flattering. If you genuinely can’t decide which way to go, start here.
How to choose: a few honest questions
We get asked all the time, “Which one should I get?” Here are the questions we’d ask you back:
Quick tip: Bring a photo of a lash look you love to your consultation. We can tell you exactly which style will achieve it. Not sure where to start? Book a quick consult or first-time appointment here.
1. What’s your goal?
If you want to wake up looking “put together” without mascara → classic.
If you want fuller lashes that still look believable → hybrid.
If you want a noticeable, glamorous transformation → volume.
2. What does your daily life look like?
A high-corporate environment may make volume feel too much for daily wear. A bridal photoshoot or social calendar may make classic feel underwhelming. Hybrid sits comfortably in between for most lifestyles.
3. What are your natural lashes like?
If you have lots of natural lashes, classic works beautifully — you already have density to work with. If your natural lashes are short, sparse, or fine, hybrid or volume will give you a more dramatic upgrade.
4. How often will you come in for infills?
All extension styles need infills every 2–3 weeks to maintain. Volume holds its look slightly longer because the fans are fuller to begin with. If infills aren’t realistic for your schedule, classic is the most forgiving as it fades out.
How long does each style last?
With proper aftercare, all three styles last about the same — around 6 to 8 weeks before a full removal is needed, with infills every 2–3 weeks to maintain density.

Pricing and appointment time at our North Lakes kiosk
A general guide for a full set at Iconic Brow N Lash:
- Classic: ~1.5–2 hours
- Hybrid: ~2 hours
- Volume: ~2.5–3 hours
We recommend booking around 30 minutes longer for your first appointment so we can chat through your goals and choose the right style together.
For current pricing, see our eyelash extensions service page or call us at the kiosk.
Still not sure? Here’s our honest recommendation
If you’ve never had lash extensions before and you can’t decide, we usually suggest hybrid for your first set. It’s the most universally flattering, gives you noticeable results without being too dramatic, and helps you figure out whether you’d prefer to dial it up (volume) or down (classic) next time.
Once you’ve worn a set and seen how they look on your face, the decision for round two becomes much easier.
