Cosmetic tattoo aftercare: the complete healing timeline (day by day)

Cosmetic tattoo aftercare — freshly healed powder brows at Iconic Brow Wax N Beauty, North Lakes

The short version

Your cosmetic tattoo heals in about four weeks, and it will look different at almost every stage — darker at first, then flaky, then too light, then just right. None of that is a problem. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect day by day, what to do, and what to leave alone.

Day 1: bolder and darker than you expected

Fresh out of your appointment, your brows (or lips) will look noticeably darker and more defined than the final result — sometimes 30–50% darker. This is normal and temporary. There may be mild redness and swelling around the area, and a little clear fluid on the surface. Gently blot it away with clean, dry tissue as directed at your appointment. Don’t rub.

Tonight: sleep on your back if you can, keep hair and hands off the area, and skip your usual skincare over the tattooed zone.

Days 2–4: darker still, then dry

The colour often looks its darkest around day two or three. By day four, the area starts to feel tight and dry. Keep following the aftercare instructions we gave you — a light application of the recommended aftercare product, nothing else. No makeup on or near the area, no active skincare (retinol, AHAs, vitamin C) anywhere close.

Days 5–10: the flaking stage — do not pick

Fine flakes will start lifting, a bit like light sunburn peeling. This is the stage where results are won or lost. Every flake you pick pulls pigment out with it and can leave a patchy spot that needs correcting later. Let every flake fall on its own, even the annoying half-attached ones.

Days 7–14: the ghosting phase (don’t panic)

After the flakes come off, the colour often looks far too light — sometimes like it has mostly disappeared. This is called ghosting, and it catches almost everyone off guard. The pigment hasn’t gone anywhere; it’s sitting under a fresh layer of new skin that hasn’t turned transparent yet. Over the next week or two, the colour resurfaces and evens out.

Weeks 3–4: your true colour settles

By the end of week four, the skin has fully healed and the colour you see is close to your true result — typically softer and more natural than day one. Small light patches or uneven spots at this stage are completely normal and exactly what the touch-up appointment is for.

Weeks 6–8: your touch-up appointment

The 6–8 week touch-up is part of the process, not an optional extra — it refines the shape, fills any spots that healed lighter, and locks in your result. At Iconic Brow Wax N Beauty it’s included in your cosmetic tattoo price, so book it in before you leave your first appointment.

The full list: what to avoid while healing

For the first 7–10 days, keep the area away from: direct water pressure in the shower (wash around it), swimming pools and saunas, heavy sweating at the gym, makeup on the treated area, sun exposure, and active skincare ingredients. For the first four weeks, no facials, peels or laser near the area, and be gentle with sun — fresh pigment fades fast under UV. Once healed, daily SPF over your tattoo is the single best thing you can do to make it last. More on that in our guide to how long cosmetic tattooing lasts.

Lip blush: a few extra notes

Lip blush follows the same overall timeline but moves faster — expect more swelling on day one, flaking that starts earlier (around day three), and a strong ghosting phase where lips look almost bare before the colour blooms back around week three. Keep lips hydrated with the recommended balm, drink through a straw for the first couple of days, and avoid spicy food while the surface heals.

When to contact us

Mild redness, tightness and flaking are all normal. Get in touch if you notice increasing pain after day three, spreading redness, heat, or anything that looks like infection — it’s rare, but we’d always rather hear from you early. You can reach us at the salon inside Westfield North Lakes any day we’re open.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shower after cosmetic tattoo?
Yes — just keep direct water pressure and cleansers off the treated area for the first 7–10 days. Wash around it and pat dry if it gets damp.

My brows look way too dark. Is that normal?
Completely. Fresh pigment reads 30–50% darker than the healed result. The colour softens through the flaking and ghosting stages before settling around week four.

The colour has almost disappeared after flaking. Has it failed?
No — that’s the ghosting phase. New skin is covering the pigment and it becomes visible again over the following one to two weeks.

Can I work out while my tattoo heals?
Skip heavy sweating for the first week. Sweat carries salt through the healing skin and can push pigment out before it settles.

What if I accidentally picked a flake?
Don’t panic, and don’t pick any more. One small spot is exactly what the 6–8 week touch-up corrects.

Do I really need the touch-up appointment?
Yes. Almost every cosmetic tattoo heals with small light or uneven areas the first time. The touch-up completes the result — it’s included with your booking at Iconic Brow Wax N Beauty in North Lakes.
