If you’ve never had a Brazilian wax before, chances are you’ve already googled “does a Brazilian wax hurt” at least once — probably in incognito mode. Take a breath. Every one of our regulars had a first time too, and almost all of them say the same thing on the way out: “that was nowhere near as bad as I expected.”
This is the honest guide we wish every first-timer could read before walking into our salon at Westfield North Lakes — no sugar-coating and no scare stories. Just what actually happens, how to prepare, and how to make your first Brazilian as comfortable as possible.
The question you actually care about: does it hurt?
Honestly — a bit, but not the way you’re imagining. The sensation is a quick, sharp sting that fades in seconds, not a lingering pain. Most first-timers find the first couple of strips the hardest, and then it settles quickly as your body adjusts.
A few things genuinely make it easier:
- Technique matters more than anything. A confident waxer working in quick, clean sections hurts far less than a hesitant one. Our therapists do this every single day, and we use a premium strip wax with calming aftercare to finish.
- The first time is the hardest — after that it gets easier. Waxed hair grows back finer and sparser, so every visit after this one is more comfortable.
- Timing matters. Skin is noticeably more sensitive in the days just before and during your period. If you can, book for the week after instead.
Still nervous? A standard over-the-counter pain reliever taken 30–45 minutes before your appointment takes the edge off. That’s all most people ever need.
How to prepare in the week before
- Let the hair grow — this is the big one. Wax needs about 5–6 mm of hair to grip, which is roughly 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving. If it’s too short, the wax can’t pick it up and you’ll need a second visit. Don’t trim it yourself before your first appointment — we’ll trim it for you if it’s needed.
- Exfoliate gently 24–48 hours before. This lifts dead skin so hairs release more easily. Skip harsh scrubs on the day itself.
- Shower before you come in. A normal shower the same day is all the preparation your therapist expects — genuinely.
- Wear loose, breathable clothes. Soft cotton underwear and loose pants or a dress will feel much better afterwards than tight jeans.
- Skip the beach and fake tan that week. Sunburnt or freshly tanned skin and hot wax are a bad combination.
What actually happens in the room
Here’s the step-by-step, because the unknown is half the nerves:
- You’ll have a private room. Your therapist steps out while you undress from the waist down and get comfortable on the treatment bed.
- We check the hair length and prep the skin — a quick cleanse and a light dusting of powder so the wax grips hair, not skin.
- The waxing itself takes about 15–30 minutes. Your therapist will guide you into a few different positions so every area is reached quickly. Yes, everyone feels a bit awkward the first time. No, your therapist is not fazed — this is their everyday work, and a professional matter-of-fact approach is part of the job.
- You choose the finish. A Brazilian means everything off, front to back — or you can keep a neat strip if you prefer. Just tell your therapist at the start.
- Calming aftercare finishes the service, and you’re done. Most first appointments are in and out well inside half an hour.
Brazilian vs bikini line vs G-string — know what you’re booking
These three get mixed up constantly, so here’s the difference at our salon prices:
- Bikini line — $28. Tidies just outside the underwear line. The lightest option.
- G-string — $40. Goes further than a bikini line, leaving a narrow section at the front.
- Brazilian — $55. The full service, front to back, with the option to leave a strip.
Booking legs as well? Our Legs + Brazilian package is $100 — the holiday-prep favourite. You can see the full menu on our pricing page or read our guide to full body waxing in North Lakes.
Aftercare: the first 48 hours matter most
- For 24–48 hours, avoid hot baths, saunas, pools, the gym, tight clothing and intimate contact. Freshly waxed skin has open follicles and heat, sweat and friction are how irritation starts.
- Redness and small bumps are normal for the first day or so — they settle on their own.
- From day 3 onwards, exfoliate gently a few times a week and keep the area moisturised. This is the single best way to prevent ingrown hairs.
- Don’t shave between appointments. Shaving resets the growth cycle and makes your next wax more uncomfortable. Rebooking every 4–6 weeks keeps regrowth fine and each visit easier — here’s our full guide on how often to get a Brazilian wax.
First-timer questions we hear every week
Can I get waxed on my period?
Yes, with a fresh tampon or cup — but skin is more sensitive, so if you can wait until the week after, your first experience will be more comfortable.
How long will the results last?
You’ll be completely smooth for around 1–2 weeks, with fine regrowth appearing from week 3. Most clients rebook at the 4–6 week mark.
Is there an age requirement?
Intimate waxing is for adults. If you’re under 18, give the salon a call first and we’ll talk you through options and consent requirements.
I’m pregnant — can I still get a Brazilian?
Many mums-to-be do, especially in the final trimester. Skin can be more sensitive during pregnancy, so tell your therapist and we’ll take extra care. If you have any medical concerns, check with your midwife or GP first.
What if I chicken out halfway?
You won’t be the first and your therapist will never pressure you — but in five-plus years of waxing North Lakes locals, we can count on one hand the people who didn’t finish. The anticipation really is worse than the wax.
