Quick answer: A lash lift curls and tints your own natural lashes — low maintenance, lasts 6 to 8 weeks, nothing added. Eyelash extensions attach individual fibres to each natural lash for real length and volume — more dramatic, but they need refills every two to three weeks. If you want to wake up done with zero upkeep, get a lash lift. If you want lashes people notice across the room, get extensions. We do both at Westfield North Lakes.
The difference in one sentence each
Lash lift: we reshape what you already have — a semi-permanent curl from the root, usually paired with a tint, so your natural lashes look longer and darker without anything attached.
Eyelash extensions: we add to what you have — individual synthetic lashes bonded one by one to your natural lashes, in whatever length and fullness you choose.
Side by side
| Lash lift | Eyelash extensions | |
|---|---|---|
| The look | Your lashes, but curled, darker and more open-eyed | Added length and volume — natural through to dramatic |
| Lasts | 6–8 weeks, then fades out naturally | Indefinitely with refills every 2–3 weeks |
| Appointment | About 45–60 minutes | 1.5–2.5 hours for a full set; refills are shorter |
| Upkeep | Basically none | Refills, careful cleansing, no oil-based products |
| Cost over time | One treatment every couple of months | Higher upfront, plus regular refill appointments |
| Best for | Low-maintenance, natural enhancement | Visible glam, events, loving a full lash line daily |
What a lash lift actually involves
Your lashes are set over a silicone shield and a gentle lifting solution reshapes them at the root — think of it as a perm designed for lashes. Most clients add a tint in the same appointment, which is what creates that “wearing mascara without mascara” effect. You walk out and do nothing for six to eight weeks: swim, shower, rub your eyes, sleep on your face. There’s a full rundown on our lash lift page.
What extensions actually involve
Each extension is bonded to one of your natural lashes with a medical-grade adhesive — applied individually, never in clumps. The style is completely customisable: a Classic set gives defined, natural-looking length; Hybrid and Volume sets build fluffier, fuller looks. If you’re not sure which style suits you, our Classic vs Hybrid vs Volume guide breaks it down, and the eyelash extensions page covers the treatment itself.
Extensions shed with your natural lash cycle, which is why refills every two to three weeks keep the set full. Our guide on how long extensions last explains the cycle properly.
The real cost difference
A lash lift costs roughly a third of a full set of extensions — and that’s the whole spend, because there’s nothing to maintain. Extensions cost more upfront and then need refill appointments every few weeks to stay full, so over a year the gap widens considerably. Neither is “better value” in the abstract: extensions deliver a look a lift physically can’t, and plenty of clients consider the refills well worth it. Current prices for both are on our pricing page.
Which one suits your life?
Choose a lash lift if: you swim or train regularly, you want to cut your morning routine rather than add to it, you like your lashes but wish they did more, or you’re extension-curious but not ready for the upkeep.
Choose extensions if: you want length and volume your natural lashes can’t reach, you like a made-up look every single day, there’s a wedding or event coming, or you’re happy to trade a refill appointment every few weeks for waking up glam.
Can you do both — or switch?
Not at the same time — extensions need to bond to straight natural lashes, and a fresh lift curls them too much for a clean application. But switching is easy. Lift fading out and want more drama? Book a set once it’s grown out. Tired of refills? Let the extensions shed (or have them professionally removed) and book a lift. Plenty of our regulars alternate: extensions for summer and events, a lift for the low-key months.
Lash lift vs extensions FAQs
Will either damage my natural lashes?
Not when done properly. A lift uses your own lashes, so the main risk is over-processing — which is a technician problem, not a treatment problem. Extensions are safe when the weight suits your natural lashes and you don’t pick or pull at them. Both come down to who’s doing the work.
Can I wear mascara after a lash lift?
Yes — after the first 24 hours. Most clients find the lift plus tint replaces mascara entirely, but it’s there if you want extra on a night out.
Which is better for sensitive eyes?
Usually a lash lift — it’s a shorter appointment with less product near the lash line, and nothing stays attached afterwards. If you’ve reacted to adhesives before, tell us when you book and we’ll talk it through first.
Which should I get for a wedding?
For the bride and photos: extensions, booked a few days before with a trial set a month or two earlier. For guests or a more natural bridal look: a lash lift and tint about a week out is foolproof.
How do I know which to book if I’m still unsure?
Start with the lash lift. It’s lower commitment, cheaper, and if you finish the six weeks wishing you had more, that’s your answer — book the extensions next.
